Evenley Village

Village life

Evenley is one of the most attractive villages in the country. It is located in the extreme south west of Northamptonshire, 2 km south east of the market town of Brackley. The village was listed in the Domesday Book, as Evelai; the name comes from the site of the village being in a level "ley" or forest clearing. With a graceful church, beautiful Jacobean manor house, pub, shop, and Evenley Hall (once home to the local squire, now a private home), Evenley has everything you would expect in a perfect English village.

From "English Villages and Hamlets"
'Evenley is a delightfully trim little place, built around a square green decked with elm trees. Unlike so many green villages, the cottages are not allowed to straggle, but are neatly set in solid stone rows round three sides of the open space. I know of no other village built round a green which has so charming an air of formality as has Evenley'

The elm trees, alas, are no more, but the village still retains its essential charm.
